The Blessed Messiah and the Tower of “Love”
In the wake of an apocalypse, children alone inherit the land
Taking one another’s small, hapless hands
Believing resolutely that whether in sickness or in health……
“We’ll share whatever comes together”
Divine judgement was passed on vain, foolish sheep
Thinking their wisdom surpassed that of God’s
The “Tower of ‘Love’ ” stands to protect the crumbling world
The lifespan of Earth to burn bright at its peak
A herald came by royal decree to the village populated by youths
To deliver a prophecy
Their seamstress was to be the honourable “next Messiah”
The oracle had ordained
The “blessings” secured within the tower
Were nine “glories” that only the Messiah would be bestowed
Together we shall accompany you to the tower
So that we may preserve the life of our crumbling paradise
To accept a blessing of your own, have your being emanate
Do what you must to take hold of your glory……
If as friends we trust in one another and lend our aid
Then there is nothing that we need fear
The first blessing before them
She reaches out to the door from where life surges as a “Spectacular Wave”
Suddenly, the young man covered her hand with his own, and said
“We’ll share whatever comes together”
The Messiah pushed aside, the first blessing had been stolen
The friends were glowering at each other
At the second door, with bloodshot eyes
The swordswoman charges into the “Banquet of Flames”
The elder sister gains the “Sunlight of Graces”
Parting ways with a knowing smirk
Vexed expression, the younger sister makes for the “Slumbering Darkness”
With a determined stride
“But I am the one who was chosen……”
” ‘WE WON’T LET YOU HAVE THEM ALL TO YOURSELF……’ ”
Does “avarice” truly change a person so?
The monk chants a prayer to the “Quaking Earth”
The poet recites the “Orchestra of Thunder”
To accept a blessing of your own…… sharpen your mind
Lay claim to that glory before anyone else can……
Where have my trusted friends gone……? Are we now enemies?
There’s no place for such love here and now
The dancer sways to the “Rondo of Whirlwinds”
The elder twin distances her younger brother
To the “Garden of Glittering Snow”
She treads, where beads of joy freeze in the corners of her eyes
The ninth blessing is the dormant “Quickening of Magma”
The younger twin having deceived the Messiah
Laughs triumphantly
Betrayed by the friends she had trusted
Every “blessing” had been stolen from her
Whilst bearing a torch without flame
She heads to the altar to pray……
The “blessings” that had been sealed within the tower
……Were to be “atonements” for the one anointed as the Messiah
O Messiah, who has endured the passage with these “sacrifices”
It is time; now integrate a new life of paradise
Drowning amidst raging waves – Dancing in a sea of hellfire
Collapsing in the throes of a merciless drought
Maddened by an all-consuming darkness – Even when engulfed by earth
We will not let you go through this alone
Being struck by the judgement of lightning – Slashed by blades of wind
Even frozen to the depths of the soul – Crawling through a scorching heat
Believing resolutely that whether in sickness or in health……
“We’ll share whatever comes together”
Bound to the light of guidance, all these noble sacrifices
Are part of a foolish chain, doomed to repeat……
With the aid freely given by your loyal friends
Hold aloft the torch to beacon your fortitude
Daybreak’s bell tolls to a tone of glory
The Messiah who heeds the will of God

She gives rise to nine “sorrows” and
Reaches her hand out to the altar
Official Song Description :
When mankind sought power that surpassed human understanding thus making a mockery of God, they provoked His divine retribution. God contained nine components which made up the world within a single tower, and the world began to head into a gradual demise.
It was then that a Messiah and her dear friends climbed the tower to ask for God’s forgiveness. To earn forgiveness, the Messiah must receive the blessed light from the nine components and light the lifespan of the world at the altar.
And so — the lifespan of the world is connected to the light of a Messiah born every fifteen years.
Translator’s note :
While nothing (to my knowledge) has been said of the meaning of the “nine components” within the tower, the number used leads me to wonder whether in fact they are a nod to “Dante’s Divine Comedy”.
The “atonements” could represent the torments of the “nine circles of Hell” in Dante’s Inferno.
If the number nine here is our focus, then while there is certainly “suffering” involved, the main focus is unlikely to be Dante’s Purgatorio, which contains the “seven levels of suffering and spiritual growth” based on the simplified interpretation of the seven deadly sins by Pope Gregory I. Then again, it could very well be a part of it.
Alternatively (and my larger belief) is that they represent the “nine spheres of Heaven” in Dante’s Paradiso (Paradise) wherein there are not truly nine elements but ten, to represent the nine spheres and also the Empyrean: the abode of God.
In the end of Dante’s Divine Comedy, within the Empyrean, Dante finally inexplicably comprehends God’s will, his soul connecting with God’s love (read CANTO XXXIII). Perhaps this is an explanation for what happens to the Messiah once she is at the altar.
This may also explain why within the lyrics they describe that they are prolonging the life of their “paradise”. Maybe it is a combination of all of the above.
And therein lies the reason why I chose to translate in the title (and also within the lyrics of the song), “ai” (when in kana) as “love”.
With “ai” expressed only in kana, it leaves the interpretation of its meaning unclear. I think that certainly to the seamstress, the tower would have represented God’s love in the form of His blessings, though later in the song the word “ai” is expressed with the kanji to mean “sorrow”. Perhaps the meaning is truly both.
Of course, there have been no official statements so this is purely my own speculation, but one I, as the translator, nevertheless wanted to be able to share.
